People think Joy Division's final album is bleak because Ian Curtis committed suicide not long after recording it. But the real reason for its bleakness is that Curtis studied Sinatra's Only The Lonely before he went into the studio. The newly crooning Curtis of Closer is so down that his idea of a finger-snapping pop tune is called "Isolation." These days, the classic platter is being re-discovered by a new generation of despairing teens burdened by unfair cell-phone restrictions. -
